This ten-day journey through Western Australia leads from Perth to Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the remote goldfields. The route combines historic landmarks, spectacular natural landscapes, and fascinating outback towns.
Highlights include the Golden Pipeline, which supplies water to the goldfields, and the PUBLIC Silo Trail with its impressive artworks. In historic towns like Meckering and Southern Cross, you’ll learn about natural disasters and the adventures of the gold rush. The Golden Quest Discovery Trail offers encounters with ghost towns, famous pubs, and vast landscapes.
Nature lovers can explore the Wave Rock, Kokerbin Rock, and the red deserts of the goldfields. Lake Ballard, known for its unique sculptures by Antony Gormley, is an unforgettable stop. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is home to the Super Pit, one of Australia’s largest gold mines.
From Hyden, you’ll return to Perth via the Goldfields Woodlands National Park and the Tin Horse Highway. A journey full of history, adventure, and unique landscapes!
Day 1: Perth to Merredin

Pumpstation Nr. 1
(Mundaring Weir): A heritage-listed site showcasing 19th-century steam technology.

Golden Pipeline
A massive pipeline that transports water from Mundaring Weir to Kalgoorlie.

PUBLIC Silo Trail (Northam)
A collection of large-scale murals by various artists on grain silos.

Ettamogah Pub (Cunderdin)
A unique pub inspired by a cartoon character.

Meckering
On 14 October 1968, the town was shaken by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake at 6:58:52 PM.

Kellerberrin
Located in the heart of the Wheatbelt, the town is a warm and charming community with a rich history spanning from the Aboriginal people to European pioneers.

The Kokerbin Rock
is the third-largest monolith in Australia and an interesting, untouched place to explore flora and fauna. It features distinctive formations and caves.

Bruce Rock
This rock formation is named after the sandalwood cutter John Rufus Bruce, who worked in the area in 1879.

Merredin
is located in the central Wheatbelt, roughly halfway between Perth and Kalgoorlie, along the route of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, and is part of the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail.
Day 2: Merredin to Coolgardie

Moorine Rock
Named after a rock formation, it was an Aboriginal name adopted by explorer and surveyor Charles Hunt. The place became an important stop for gold prospectors on their way to the goldfields.

Marvel Loch
is a gold mining area near the town of the same name. The mine’s history dates back to the early 1900s. It is named after a horse that won the Caulfield Cup in 1905.

The Wimmera Hill Lookout
offers panoramic views of Southern Cross and the surrounding region.

Southern Cross Townsite
Visit the historic town and its attractions, including the Southern Cross Swimming Pool and the Yilgarn History Museum.

Coolgardie
was founded in 1892 after gold prospectors Arthur Wellesley Bayley and William Ford discovered gold in the Fly Flat region. There is a wealth of history to explore here.

The Coolgardie Bluff Cultural Heritage Trail
is located on the northeastern edge of Coolgardie. It offers scenic views, iron sculptures, and lookout points. Signs explain the cultural significance of the area to the Aboriginal people.

You’ll take a step back in time to the era of early gold rush pioneers and their discoveries, meet local outback characters, explore ghost towns, visit charming pubs, take in vast landscapes, an incredible starry sky, and much more. On your return to nature, you’ll experience the red, rugged earth of the goldfields as you’ve never seen it before on this 965-kilometre historical tour.

Kunanaling
and the remarkable rescue of Modesto Varischetti and a Yankee overlooking a claim, 25 miles north of Coolgardie.

Ora Banda
a pub with a rich history.

Siberia
is a ghost town and the site of the most deaths in the history of the goldfields.

Goongarrie
a small town that developed with shops, a post and telegraph office, and two hotels.

Menzies
The American Leslie Robert Menzies discovered the rich gold deposits north of Coolgardie and founded the town.
Day 4: Menzies to Laverton
Highlights from 7 AM to 1 PM include:

The Niagara-Dam
was built in 1897 to supply water to the locomotives on the route between Kalgoorlie and Leonora.

Kookynie
is a historic outback town known for the Kookynie Grand Hotel.

Mount Morgans
a ghost town near Laverton. Gold was discovered here in 1896 by Harry Lilley.

The Hawks-Nest-Experts
see potential for several million ounces of gold.

Laverton
Discover the soul of the outback. Located at the northern end of the Golden Quest Trail, the town holds many hidden surprises.
Day 5: Laverton to Leonora
The highlights 14 to 17 will be visited today.

The Windarra Nickel Mine and the Windarra Mine
lookout are located 28 km from Laverton. It became famous during the Poseidon nickel boom in 1969. From the platform, you have a panoramic view of the famous site and the remaining mining areas.

Murrin Murrin
is a large nickel-cobalt mining operation.

Gwalia
is a must-see for every visitor. The town has been restored to its original state from the early 1900s and is home to one of the best museums in Australia.

Leonora
is the service centre for mining and exploration and is also home to a long-established pastoral industry. The town centre is rich in historic buildings, which you can learn more about using an interactive heritage trail map.
Day 6: Leonora to Menzies
Today’s tour highlights are 18 to 22 B.

Granite Creek
Start this scenic day in Leonora with a drive to Granite Creek. This is probably the least-travelled road on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.

Copperfield
is the site of the old town of Copperfield. It is believed to have been named by a fan of Charles Dickens.

Snake Hill
Although the sculptures cannot be seen from Snake Hill Lookout, the viewpoint offers a great view of the vastness of Lake Ballard.

Lake Ballard
A visit to Lake Ballard is a must to see the 51 sculptures by Antony Gormley. They were created from laser scans of local residents.

Menzies
We need to return to Menzies to stay overnight.
Day 7: Menzies to Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Today the Golden Trail concludes with highlights 22 to 25.

Ularring
Ernest Giles and his group reached Ularring Rock on 15 October 1875 on their journey from Beltana in South Australia to Perth on the Swan River. Tommy Oldham was the first to see it.

Davyhurst
The proposed site was initially called “Davyston” in the year 1900.

Roowles Lagoon
is a freshwater wetland and is under environmental protection.

Broad Arrow Goldfield
was recorded in the “Gazette” on 11 November 1896, and the Kurawah community was founded in 1897.

Super Pit in Kalgoorlie
is the largest gold mine in Australia and is located on the Goldfields Highway on the southeastern outskirts of Kalgoorlie. The pit has an elongated shape, approximately 3.5 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide, and over 600 meters deep.
Day 8: Kalgoorlie – Boulder
We are staying here for a full day. The itinerary includes additional information about the sights in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. It won’t be possible to complete all 20 suggestions in a single sunny day. It makes sense to choose five or six activities. If you wish to take a helicopter flight over the Super Pit and the town, you’ll need to book it in advance. Your tour guide will be happy to advise you and accompany you throughout the day.
Day 9: Kalgoorlie–Boulder to Hyden

Der Goldfields Woodlands National Park
is a natural landscape with eucalyptus forests, sand plains, granite rocks, salt lakes, and freshwater swamps.

Der Boorabbin-Nationalpark
where large and diverse eucalyptus forests, as well as an abundance of wildflowers in season, can be admired.

Mulka's Cave und der Gnamma Walk Trail
are a must-see for visitors. The cave houses some of the region’s finest Aboriginal artworks.

Der Wave Rock
rises 15 metres from the ground and stretches over 100 metres in length. It looks like a giant wave of multicoloured granite crashing into the bushland below.

Hyden
More than 100,000 tourists visit the town each year to see Wave Rock and other remarkable granite formations such as Mulka’s Cave and The Humps.
Day 10: Hyden to Perth

Tin Horse Highway
We drive along the Tin Horse Highway and admire the bizarre collection of tin horses lining the road to the Jilakin Race Track.

The Corrigin Dog Cemetery
was established in 1974 in honour of man’s best friend. It is unique, with over 200 beloved animals buried here.

York
was the first town built in the bush after Perth. The town hall, built in 1911, is a key feature of the townscape and a fine example of Edwardian opulence.

Perth
marks the end of an incredibly beautiful journey through the history of Western Australia, experienced in some of the most original and best-preserved landscapes. Gold was and still is the magic word that drives people to achieve great things, no matter the cost. Encounters with fauna and flora—animals and plants, most of which are native to the rugged landscapes of Western Australia—will leave a lasting impression on your memory.
